Buried pipe material is not in the records
Say that the material is unknown and identify any accessible documented endpoints. Thermal imaging records surface temperature, not water inside walls.
Do not infer buried material from visible endpoints
An accessible connection may provide a useful assessment point without identifying the material along the whole buried route. Tell the investigator which installation records are missing. Material and conditions affect acoustic transmission, so an unclear result should not be converted into a certainty about an undocumented pipe section.
Ask which additional evidence narrows the source
The findings should explain the observed sound or temperature evidence, its corroboration and any remaining route uncertainty. If those clues do not support a particular opening, ask what authorized information would change the conclusion. A quiet section or weak reading alone is not a universal assurance that the suspected system is sound.
What the chosen detection method establishes
Ask how the acoustic method handles that uncertainty and what further evidence would be needed. Acoustic findings depend on conditions and need corroborating evidence.
